Photo Study: The Artist At Room Temperature

c>log
This is part of a self-portrait project that was shot in 1990 on Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 Film (TX135-24) film with a trusty and very fast f1.2 50mm lens mounted on a Minolta XGM. This image is intended an expression of the concept of vanitas, which is a Latin phrase that means "emptiness" and loosely translated corresponds to the meaninglessness of earthly life and the transient nature of vanity.

In these type of images the artist is free to use artistic license to interpolate memento mori into the work. Memento mori is a Latin phrase which means very simply "Remember you will die". It names a genre of artistic creations that vary widely from one another, but which all share the same purpose: to remind people of their own mortality and the punishment they will receive if they transgress the rules of their religion. Special Agent Presley's Credentials

c>log
Even though he was a heavy user of various medications at the time, Elvis Presley, the King of Rock 'n' Roll, desired to become an agent for the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. He made this known to the President at the time, Richard Nixon, by way of a letter which was hand-delivered to the White House. Elvis wanted to fight illegal drugs and he wanted to be a special drug agent.

On December 12, 1970 a meeting was scheduled for Elvis to meet Richard Nixon for the purpose of receiving his special agent credentials. The famous meeting occurred in the Oval Office of the White House and Elvis was packing a vintage Colt 45 that he gave to President as a gift. Not many people can go the White House with a large caliber firearm. Later that day, Elvis got his badge and ID that made him Special Agent Elvis A. Presley of the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Elvis, to our knowledge, never enforced any laws pertaining to dangerous and illegal drugs; but, he was heavily involved in "field research" as we all know. Concrete (Visual) Poetry

c>log
Tropicália, also known as Tropicalismo, is a Brazilian art movement that originated in the late 1960s. Tropicália, as an artistic movement, involved theatre, music, poetry and art. Tropicália was influenced by what is called Concrete Poetry, a variant genre of the Brazilian avant-garde poetry embodied in the works of the movement.

Concrete Poetry is sometimes called Size Poetry or Visual Poetry. This type of poetry involves the typographical arrangement of words in order to form a poem as well as a visual impression. The arrangement of the words are designed to convey a particular meaning or meanings both visually and poetically. It is important to note that the composition of words, visually, are just as important as the text of the poem.

The first examples of Concrete Poetry were shown in São Paulo, Brazil during a 1956 exhibition by Haroldo de Campos, Augusto de Campos and Wlademir Dias Campos, among others. The major idea involved here, as stated in the manifesto of the group Noigandres (the group who staged the first exhibition), is that the words, as an integral part of the visual work, allows for the words themselves to become a part of the poetry – not just a blank background for the ideas. Poets and artists today are still involved with the interactive aspects of this type of poetry in order to create a word/visual synergy between words, letters and compositions of the same.

Almost anyone can do it.
