The human condition refers to the distinctive features of human existence. As finite and mortal entities, there are a series of features that are common to most human lives, and some that are inevitable for all. These features and the human response to them constitute the human condition. However, understanding the precise nature and scope of what is meant by the human condition is itself a philosophical and an artistic problem
The human condition can and will present itself at anytime and anywhere. In this case, some collectors of aluminum cans stationed behind a college beer bar on a big game day. This was a very good location for these gentlemen – they collected lots of cans on this beautiful Autumn Saturday. Thanks for visiting and please come back often!

The first image is an older self-portrait taken in 1991 on Kodak Tri-X Pan 400 35mm print film with a trusty Minolta XGM sporting an f1.2 50mm prime lens. The setting is a university painting studio and the prop is a parabolic anti-shoplifting mirror. The second image is a more contemporary self-portrait taken in 2009 and the reflection source is a parabolic chrome cap on an old barber chair headrest. Needless to say, this newer image was shot with a Nikon D90 DSLR.
As per usual, the artist is enjoying the artistic privacy of being the one behind the lens while trying to find out what is really on the other side of these mysterious reflections. Thanks for visiting and please come back often. Your comments are always welcome.

Alton Ellis, the Godfather of Rocksteady music, was born in 1938 in Trenchtown, Kingston, Jamaica. Along with his younger sister Hortense, who was born in 1941, the two created singles and duets for Clement and Coxsone Dodd's legendary Studio One in Kingston during the early days of ska and rocksteady. The pair also recorded for Studio One's chief competition at the time which was the Treasure Isle label owned by none other than Duke Reid. This switching between label by the Ellis siblings gave them the opportunity to record for some of the biggest names in Reggae music – people like Bunny Lee, King Jammy, Prince Buster, Eddy Perkins and Sugar Minott. And we are rewarded today with an outstanding collection of the best from the Ellis siblings.
|
Unfortunately, Alton passed away in 2008 and was preceded in death by Hortense (died 2000). However, some of their recordings have survived over the years. In fact, Hortense recorded so little that any song by her could be considered rare. This album contains the rarest of their singles, but oddly, only one duet appears on the album. Included in this gem of a collection are the best soul covers by Alton and Hortense. These are two of the best voices you will ever hear. Highly recommended for anybody who likes soul, reggae or the rocksteady beat.

"There's no difference between a flying saucer and a time machine." |
![]() |
There, thousands of people go missing each year.
Nobody knows where they go. They just disappear.
But if you think about it, you realize something:
There had to be a time when there was no people, right?
Well, where did all these people come from?
I'll tell you where: the future.
Where did all these people disappear to?
The past? – That's right! And how did they get there?
Flying saucers.
Which are really...yeah you got it...time machines.
– Miller, 1984

Keep out! Go away! Do not enter! All of which try to instruct or warn us but rather end up appealing to the curious side of human behavior. If we cannot have it, cannot enter it or cannot witness it, we must do so, because it says not to ..... One could use the term forbidden fruit which is metaphor that describes any object of desire whose appeal is a direct result of the knowledge that it cannot or should not be obtained or something that someone may want but cannot have.
Why do you think the grass is greener on the other side? Very simply, it is because that is the grass you don't have. Humans tend to believe that what they want is better than what they have, and in many cases they could be wrong. The Grass is not always greener on the other side. So, you won't feel the weight and scratchiness of that thick silk screen ink when you wear our t-shirts! All you'll feel is that soft (very soft) pure cotton. The t-shirts will "fluff up" over time as they are put through the wash. Close your eyes and run your hands over one of our high quality t-shirts – you can't even tell something is printed on the t-shirt! Amazing, and very cool. After a couple of washes, these t-shirts will soften up and look worn –but, it's a brand new t-shirt, ready for years and years of faithful service. Visit the EricHatheway.com Online Store today. You'll feel and see the difference. Happy shopping, you'll look great!
A back alley can be described as a dirty, unprepossessing, sordid, or clandestine area behind or between buildings. The typical back alley is a less prominent or inferior location; also, the term back alley is used to describe a scene of clandestine or illegal dealings. Rich in detail and dirt, these images are certainly a street apart from the main or business area of a town. Thanks for visiting and please come back often!

| Veterans Day, 1954 BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION 3071 Whereas it has long been our customs to commemorate November 11, the anniversary of the ending of World War I, by paying tribute to the heroes of that tragic struggle and by rededicating ourselves to the cause of peace; and Whereas in the intervening years the United States has been involved in two other great military conflicts, which have added millions of veterans living and dead to the honor rolls of this Nation; and Whereas the Congress passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926 (44 Stat. 1982), calling for the observance of November 11 with appropriate ceremonies, and later provided in an act approved May 13, 1938 (52 Stat. 351), that the eleventh of November should be a legal holiday and should be known as Armistice Day; and Whereas, in order to expand the significance of that commemoration and in order that a grateful Nation might pay appropriate homage to the veterans of all its wars who have contributed so much to the preservation of this Nation, the Congress, by an act approved June 1, 1954 (68 Stat. 168), changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day: Now, Therefore, I, Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States of America, do hereby call upon all of our citizens to observe Thursday, November 11, 1954, as Veterans Day. On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain. I also direct the appropriate officials of the Government to arrange for the display of the flag of the United States on all public buildings on Veterans Day. In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and cause the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed. Done at the City of Washington this eighth day of October in the Year of our Lord nineteen hundred and fifty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and seventy-ninth. /s/ DWIGHT D. Mary Weiss, former lead singer for the 1960s girl group The Shangri-Las, has been out of show business for more than 30 years. When we last heard from her it was her last appearance with the Shangri-Las in the 1970s at a reunion show. Mary Weiss was known for not appearing on stage with the other three members of the group until late 1965 because she wanted to avoid the exhausting routine and the inevitable pitfalls of life on the road in the music business.
![]() |
Then, in 2007, some thirty years later, Mary Weiss has reemerged on the music scene with a backing band, the Reigning Sound, to create a wonderful musical offering featuring Mary's distinctive voice and style. The Dangerous Game does not try to emulate the sound of the Shangri-Las but rather pays an homage to the era when her band was leader of the pack and gives a strong look forward to what we might expect from her in the future.
![]() |
You might think of this work by Mary Weiss as what would have come about if the Shangri-Las had remained together as a group. At the same time, this album doesn't try to be so contemporary that it loses track of the object of the work – the unique and very mesmerizing voice of Mary Weiss. You will still hear that Spector-like "wall of sound" but this time it will feel up-to-date and not overproduced.
Mary certainly sounds older but she can still display the same sweetness and the same toughness that we heard when she was with the Shangri-Las. The subject and focus of this album is undeniably Mary Weiss; but, nothing on this work sounds forced or out-of-place. She just simply picks up where she left off. And, Mary's Dangerous Game passes an important musical test – it would be just as good if this was a new band or an unknown band. Give it a spin!
