1950s Fetish Art (Part 2 of 3)
Fetish art is a genre of artwork that shows people in fetishistic situations such as bondage and domination/submission scenarios. The intent of this genre is for person viewing this particular type of art to achieve arousal from a physical object or from a specific situation – sometimes in combination. The fetish art shown here involves specific clothing in scenarios of domination/submission which feature a female playing the dominating role.
In the 1950s, American comics and other types of publications with bondage or fetish themes began appearing across the nation. This was the same period of history when Bettie Page became famous for her fetish photographs and short movie reels. Mostly in the 1950s, fetish art was simply depictions of people dressed in fetish clothing. Fetish clothing includes rubber suits, various types of undergarments, sexy stockings, very high heels, very tight corsets and intimidating boots. The most common fetish theme of this era is a woman dressed as a dominatrix. This type of art was not found at the drugstore or the corner news stand and definitely was NSFW in the straight-laced 1950s.
