Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

c>log

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday that is celebrated in Mexico as well as around the world in various other cultures. This odd but very popular holiday focuses on the gathering of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.

It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it nearly rates as a National Holiday. The Day of the Dead celebration takes place on November 1st and 2nd, which is in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day (November 1st) and All Souls' Day (November 2nd).

Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. Skulls and skeletons are used to symbolize death and rebirth. The Day of the Dead is not a mournful remembrance, but a happy and colorful celebration where death takes a lively, friendly expression.
