Sandy Sarjeant: Go-Go Girl Supreme
c>log
Go-Go dancers are dancers who are employed to entertain crowds at a discotheque. Go-go dancing originated in the early 1960s when women in New York City began to get up on tables and dance the twist. There were many 1960s-era mini-skirted clubgoers who wore what came to be called go-go boots to night clubs, so night club promoters in the mid 1960s conceived the idea of hiring them to entertain the patrons.
There was however, a German music program called Beat Club that ran from September 1965 to December 1972. It was broadcast from Bremen, Germany on the national public TV channel and on Radio Bremen as well. The television version of Beat Club was based on a format much like American Bandstand. Beat Club, however, made full use of the go-go girl craze on-screen to liven up the musical performances in typical European fashion.
Often times, the show only had the music to play because the band couldn't appear in person. So, in come the crew of German go-go girls to take the place of the performers by go-go dancing to the songs. The leader of this group of German go-go girls for Beat Club was Sandy Sarjeant (seen below). You can find many of her performances by searching for her name or Beat Club on YouTube. Do this, and you will see, she is Go-Go Girl Supreme! Thanks for visiting and please come back often!
