Behold The Egg Roll
c>log
The egg roll (in Chinese, literally "egg scroll") is an Asian appetizer that originated in East Asia but has spread throughout the super buffet and take-out cultures of the planet as the premier appetizer of choice. Egg rolls are now even offered in quick-to-serve microwave packages and are offered at convenience stores as food for those on the run.
There exists somewhat of a debate over who created the egg roll. Some believe that the egg roll came from the spring roll. A spring roll is a fried pastry that can be found in the Philippines and Indonesia as well as many other Asian countries. Many Asian countries claim to have invented the egg roll since it is a food staple throughout Asia kitchens. That's okay, the egg roll belongs to all of us now....and you can buy 'em by the dozen!
The egg roll is made by wrapping chopped vegetables, meat and noodles in a sheet of dough. The dough is then dipped in an egg wash before being deep fried. The egg roll can be either open or closed on the ends. Egg rolls use wheat-based dough while the spring roll uses a rice-based dough. The egg roll is most often larger than the spring roll and in most places terms are used interchangeably. Since both kinds of appetizers use egg as part of its ingredients, it would not be considered wrong to call both "egg rolls." And, the egg roll keeps evolving as the product of cultural and individual choices.
