The English Beat: Save It For Later

c>log
The Beat (known in the U.S. as The English Beat) is a 2-Tone ska revival band from England founded in 1978. What is so unusual and what makes The English Beat so appealing is the fusion of ska, reggae, punk, soul and pop and their socially conscious voice as expressed in their lyrics. The English Beat only released 3 albums from 1980 to 1982. Sadly, there are no other cuts from the English Beat – anywhere (we've looked). The band broke-up in 1983 amidst much bad blood in the group. In fact, 21 years later, in 2004, the VH1 show Bands Reunited tried unsuccessfully to reunite the original line-up.

Take a listen to one of our absolute favorite songs from our absolute favorite band — The English Beat. Enjoy this timeless classic with the smoothest ska beat ever heard by yearning ears. Check out Rankin' Roger dressed real natty as a Rude Boy and listen to Saxa (Lionel Martin) master that saxophone. The video is visually very 80s and the music sounds as fresh as the day it was unwrapped.

Save It For Later – The English Beat

Two dozen other dirty lovers
Must be a sucker for it
Cry cry but I don't need my mother
Just hold my hand while I come to a decision on it.

Sooner or later your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later don't run away and let me down.
Sooner or later you hit the deck you get found out
Save it for later don't run away and let me down, you let me down.

Black air and seven seas all rotten through
But what can you do?
I don't know how I'm meant to act with all of you lot
Sometimes I don't try
I just now now now now now now now now now now now
Now now now now now now now now now now now

Sooner or later your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later don't run away and let me down.
Sooner or later you hit the deck you get found out
Save it for later don't run away and let me down
You runaway runaway and let me down.

Two dozen other stupid reasons
Why we should suffer for this
Don't bother trying to explain them
Just hold my hand while I come to a decision on it.

Sooner or later your legs give way, you hit the ground
Save it for later don't run away and let me down.
Sooner or later you'll hit the deck you'll get found out
Save it for later don't runaway and let me down, you let me down.
You run away run away runaway runaway runaway runaway
And let me down.

Dave Wakeling, a founding member of the English Beat and the composer of most of the Beat's songs was once asked about the meaning of the song. He replied, "I wrote it when I was a teenager. I wrote it before The Beat started. And it was about turning from a teenager to someone in their 20s, and realizing that the effortless promise for your teenage years was not necessarily going to show that life was so simple as you started to grow up. So it was about being lost, about not really knowing your role in the world, trying to find your place in the world. So, you couldn't find your own way in the world, and you'd have all sorts of people telling you this, that, and the other, and advising you, and it didn't actually seem like they knew any better. So it was like keep your advice to yourself. Save it - for later." And, there you have it....it's on Special Beat Service, released in 1982, and everyone should own a copy of this classic album. Remember to rock steady!
