The tempo of music carries emotional implications. For example, in our every day speech, we hurry our speech in times of stress or excitement. Likewise, our bodies move forward when we are eager or our bodies are held back in lassitude. In an art of movement such as music, the rate of movement is of prime importance. A listener responds to music tempo both physically and psychologically – breathing and being adjust to the rate of the movement and to the feeling of the music. This effect occurs on both conscious and unconscious levels. The close connection between tempo and mood indicate the character of the music as well as the pace of the music.
