Artists Stage Scenes For Google Maps Street View

c>log
By now, pretty much everyone knows about Google Maps Street View. In order to capture the images for Google Maps Street View, teams of technicians travel around the country in vehicles sporting strange arrays of radar-like towers on rooftop racks. The result is a 360 degree panoramic view of America's towns, neighborhoods and streets.

It wasn't long before a couple of artists, Ben Kinsley and Robin Hewlett, decided to take advantage of this situation by staging scenes for the Google Maps Street View vehicles as they drove past various points on their journey through the north side of Pittsburgh. The two innovative artists enlisted the cooperation of local residents who gladly helped in the very first artistic intervention on Google Maps Street View. Kinsley and Hewlett staged scenes such as a wedding, a rescue, a sword fight, a marathon, a parade and even a band practice in a garage. This is most likely the start of a new form of art based on new technology and a definite score for original thought at this late date in history.
