Ocean Rain Is Revisited By Echo & The Bunnymen

In 1984, Echo & The Bunnymen released their timeless classic album entitled Ocean Rain. Arguably one of the best complete album offererings by any band, Ocean Rain was the capstone of Echo & The Bunnymen's career. Still playing on a regular basis, mostly around their hometown of Liverpool, Echo & The Bunnymen recently marked the 30th anniversary of Ocean Rain in a big way.

The complete track listing of Ocean Rain was played by Echo & The Bunnymen in concert with an orchestra. There were only a handful of dates played in the U.K. However, the grand finale of the Ocean Rain anniversary tour was the show that was held in New York's Radio City Music Hall. The band warmed up with some songs that were not on Ocean Rain. This set was lighter and more hit oriented than what would follow at the break.

Following intermission, Echo & The Bunnymen were joined by a string section and an extra player on percussion. What really made this presentation of Ocean Rain special was the band resisting the urge to make the songs longer or more elaborate than when it was first produced. The extra instruments were only used to accentuate and add extra color to the music as is was written. When Ocean Rain was first released, it was advertised as "The Greatest Album Ever Made." That was maybe just hype in the beginning, but Echo & The Bunnymen may have been right – this just might be the greatest album ever made.
