Psychobilly & The Wedge

c>log
Psychobilly music is a  musical sub-genre that combines the 50s cool of rockabilly with the 70s anger of punk rock. By mixing these two decades the psychobilly culture developed the de facto psychobilly look called the psychobilly wedge. The word psychobilly actually comes from a 1976 Wayne Kemp song written for and performed by Johnny Cash called "One Piece At A Time," in which an automobile is referred to as a "psychobilly Cadillac."

The term reappeared several years later when The Cramps advertised their music on show flyers as "rockabilly voodoo" and "psychobilly." The London band "The Meteors" is generally considered the original psychobilly band inasmuch as they had a rockabilly cat, a punk rocker and a horror movie fan as members of the band. Psychobilly music deals with themes of overt sexuality, hot rods, horror movies and anything generally considered violent or taboo. There is, however, a strong element of humor that runs through the music and fashion of this sub-culture.

To really get into the swing of this whole scene, a proper hairstyle is important. And, that hairstyle is undoubtedly the Psychobilly Wedge. It is a "slight" modification of the classic pompadour created by the Psychobilly subculture. Sometimes called a "Vamp Ramp" the Psychobilly Wedge takes the best of the pompadour and mixes it with punk-inspired shaved sides but no spikes on top. The top is slicked back and made to stand up like a proud pompadour should.  Oi Oi Oi
