Renowned actor and Oscar winner Charlton Heston passed away Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills, California with his wife Lydia by his side. He was born John Charlton Carter on October 4, 1924 in Evanston, Illinois. He combined his mother's maiden name, Charlton, with his stepfather's name Heston during his early days as an actor in Chicago and as a student at Northwestern University. After a tour of duty during World War II he landed on Broadway making his debut in "Antony and Cleopatra."

Charlton Heston loved to play historical characters, either real or fictional, as evidenced by the many roles he assumed during his career. He teamed with Cecil B. DeMille to create some of the best and some of the last epic Hollywood movies ever made. He appeared as a circus manager in "The Greatest Show On Earth", he played Moses in "The Ten Commandments", raced a chariot in "Ben Hur", painted a famous chapel in "The Agony and the Ecstasy", and lead an army in "El Cid."

In the later part of his acting career, Heston played several futuristic roles in movies such as "Soylent Green" and of course, "The Planet of the Apes." He also became very outspoken in his political views and eventually was elected president of the National Rifle Association in 2000. Mr. Heston also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is survived by his wife, two children and six grandchildren.
